I recently spoke to a Filipino woman who has been struggling in her job situation and she told me of some of the experiences she has had recently. Both good and bad her experiences demonstrate the issues with employee treatment and prove that we need to work on treating employees better and also demonstrate how to treat your employees, with compassion.
"I speak to my employers kindly, that is my movement to my employers. If I will talk to my employers in another, way maybe they will throw me to the windows, maybe they will push me down the stairs from the floor. But I didn't [without kindness.] They are pushing me to go out and find [a] job.
I also am taking this opportunity to show people they should help find [a] job for me. Then they will remind me to go to those houses of those Kuwaiti[s], I go and check my privacy [if I were to be employed by them]. This is my first time to go never fear [anymore] because I want-- I want the right employers to see whether they can give me privacy.
One employer that I-- I met which, all of them are always telling this, they are forcing me to open my mouth [say something back to them] because they won't give me a day off. I said, I need rest. For me, when I just worship. They told me, pray in the house and this is enough, Khalas. If you are not sure to what you say then they will not do good [to you]. Then I said to them, I said there is one employer I told them we need day off every week and we also like rest and he said to me, going to a church is spending money [because I will have to take a taxi]. And I said if I spend more money because of my church because of my worship, it's okay for me because I am blessed and its returning to me. Then he said, okay you can use my car, there is a driver for that. We can be safe and get along, we just have to be very careful in the things we are talking about. I never hate my employer because he give me chance to talk with other people and other nannies and other Filipina. I am very grateful for people who try to help me find [a] new job ... but these things are useless because of my [other] employer. I don't know what is in his mind. There is one employer also trying to, to take me. But we [me and my family] are the ones that are suffering. [It goes like this,] My new employer backs out and then they will talk to me secretly and give also money to find a new job. Giving me 30KD to go out and find [a] job. So I'm never scared. We also have to be careful about our mobiles. They know everything about me, [even] my calls. I learned that they are forwarding my calls and everything. And many people are also helping me. Also what happened and how to disable everything [so that my employers can not access it]. They can not find holes and learn about me.
Last month, I was not able to send money home [to my family in the Philipines], I am not sending money now but I am checking my family, they are all okay and they said yes we are all okay. [I came to Kuwait to make enough money to send back home for my family yet I have to] save money for the problems I know [are] coming and is okay.
